How the 5 Second Rule is Changing my Eating Habits
Did you know that 5 seconds is all it takes to change your life? Seriously!! Just 5 seconds…5…4…3…2…1…GO! This is the simple concept behind Mel Robbins’ 5 Second Rule and I’m using it to get my eating on track.
Why is it so hard for us to make ourselves do the things that we KNOW will solve our problems and improve our life? It’s because of our feelings…our emotions. We may not realize it, but almost every single decision we make in life is based on our feelings instead of logic. And, unfortunately, our feelings don’t always align with what’s best for us.
Our brains are wired to naturally take the easy way out. It doesn’t like making hard choices…even if they’re good for us. I think this is one of the reasons why we fail to hit some of our goals. All too often we let our feelings get in the way of doing what we KNOW we should do. We don’t FEEL like getting on the phone to make that cold call. We don’t FEEL like getting up early to work out. We don’t feel like doing lots of things.
Here’s the important thing to know…If you have an impulse to act on a goal, you must physically move within 5 seconds or your brain will kill the idea. Before you let your fears, doubts, and feelings talk you out of it you MUST ACT…in 5-4-3-2-1.
It’s truly amazing to me how the simple act of counting down from 5 can make all the difference, but it does. The rule is a tool that creates immediate behavior change. You may not always be able to control how you feel, but you can always choose how you act.
I want to challenge each of you to try this very simple rule the next time you have a decision to make. It make suck at first (if I’m being honest), but the more you do it, the easier it will get. Are you ready?
5 – 4 – 3 – 2- 1 – GO!
