Why You Should NEVER Hit Your Snooze Button
When I was younger I would set my bedroom clock 27 minutes fast just so I could hit the snooze button three times each morning and still get up at the time I needed to. I thought I could trick my mind into believing that I was getting extra sleep, yet in reality I was robbing myself of it and actually making myself more tired by what I was doing. How incredibly ridiculous is that??
Do you normally hit the snooze button when your alarm goes off in the morning? If so, you should stop! Let me explain why….
I’m not sure how much you know about sleep cycles, but they typically last between 90-110 minutes each. All throughout the night you are constantly going through these cycles, and then a couple hours before you typically get up, your body starts to release hormones that help you to naturally wake up. When your alarm goes off in the morning your brain tells your body that it’s time to get up, but when you hit the snooze and fall back asleep you put your body back into a new sleep cycle. And how long do they last? Yep, 90-110 minutes. Most alarm clock snooze buttons go off after 9 minutes. That leaves another 80-100 minutes of an uncompleted sleep cycle. It’s no wonder why you sometimes feel super groggy in the morning after hitting the snooze. Your body thinks that it’s still time to be sleeping!
Studies show that your brain functions at its best between 2-3 hours after you wake up in the morning. Even if your body is still tired, this is when your brain does its best work. This won’t happen if your brain thinks that it’s still supposed to be sleeping because you started a new sleep cycle by hitting the snooze button. This kills your productivity first thing in the morning.
So, what do we need to do about it? I challenge you to STOP HITTING THE SNOOZE BUTTON! Tomorrow morning when your alarm goes off, get up! Do not hit the snooze. Instead, just throw back the covers and get out of bed. It’s really not as bad as it sounds and your productivity will thank me! Are you up for the challenge?
